Why Choose the Jewellery Quarter?

Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter is steeped in history, being described by English Heritage as a “national treasure”, and we certainly agree. This beloved district of Birmingham oozes charm and character with its combination of sleek, modern construction and beautiful pre-Victorian structures. What’s more, ‘the Quarter’ is a mere stone’s throw away from the bustling city centre, providing a convenient and idyllic form of respite from the modern, busy city.

Being the heart of jewellery production since the 1800s, the Jewellery Quarter is known for its 21st Century reconfigurations of traditional buildings, many of which we are delighted to be bringing to the market. Expect to see exposed brick, vaulted ceilings, and open beams in restored Grade Listed buildings. Browse our offerings in the Jewellery Quarter here:

What is there to do in the Jewellery Quarter?

The region is home to some of the most impressive architecture in the West Midlands, with many building developers seeking to retain the classic features that have made the Jewellery Quarter so famous. The buildings seen throughout the Quarter combine Italianate, Gothic and Arts & Crafts facades, bringing character to the streets. Although the architecture of the Jewellery Quarter provides a portal back to the 19th and 20th Centuries, those looking to further explore the history of the region would enjoy the Museum of the Jewellery Quarter, the centrepiece of which is an exquisitely preserved workshop. The equally as fascinating Pen Museum gives visitors a chance to try their hand at calligraphy and participate in crafts workshops – the museum offers an unconventional day out for visitors of any age to appreciate the history of this seemingly mundane item.

Coffee Shop

The Jewellery Quarter’s café culture

The ‘Quarter is home to examples of exquisite craftsmanship, specifically jewellery (who would have guessed?), which attracts visitors to the region from across the globe, namely those planning marriages or civil ceremonies. The region’s namesake pays homage to hundreds of years of jewellery making, with most retailers being found on Vyse Street, the Victorian epicentre of the Jewellery Quarter. The nearby School of Jewellery has attracted global talent since 1890, providing a unique education for future jewellers and goldsmiths.

Residents and visitors can also unwind at one of the many restaurants, bars and cafés that the Jewellery Quarter is known for. From the independent Saint’s Kitchen to the Urban Café, the region is home to a variety of niche eateries that cannot be found anywhere else. For those looking for an excuse to experience the best in fine dining, Michelin Guide restaurant The Wilderness can be found on Warstone Lane, which is within easy walking distance from all locations within the Jewellery Quarter’s perimeter.

Latest information about the Jewellery Quarter

There is certainly no shortage of developments in the pipeline, with the region evolving at a pace to rival Digbeth.

Over a quarter of a billion pounds is being funneled into one development by Moda at Great Charles Street Queensway. The scheme hopes to rejuvenate acres of brownfield land by converting it into a space for 722 homes, commercial spaces and a swanky sky lounge. Similarly, St Paul’s Quarter is pending rejuvenation by Apsley House Capital and Galliard Homes, who are hoping to redesign the popular conservation area into a community of residential and commercial spaces.

Despite there being a plethora of projects in the pipeline, the Jewellery Quarter continues to attract attention from developers, with proposals for both residential and commercial spaces throughout the district coming in their droves. One of the latest proposals at Key Hill seeks to maintain the quaint character of the Harry Smith and Gem Buildings whilst converting some of the more dilapidated units in close proximity into over 60 apartments.

Businesses and residents residing in the Jewellery Quarter are actively investing their time and funds in their neighbourhood as part of the JQ BID. From exhibiting the regions heritage at the JQ Festivals Project, to collaborating with local businesses to encourage growth, there is a tangible sense of community in the Jewellery Quarter to the benefit of businesses, residents and visitors.
