Time Out recently hailed Birmingham one of its best places to visit in the UK in 2023 thanks to its abundance of entertainment, attractions and – perhaps most importantly – the range of fantastic places to eat in Birmingham. As proud Birmingham locals, we’re well acquainted with the many foodie hotspots across the city: from our many Michelin Star offerings to classic pub grub, and fantastic fast food. Check out Centrick’s favourite eateries across Brum for each and every occasion:
Just round the corner from our Birmingham office is the brand new Orelle restaurant. Set 24 floors above the hustle and bustle of Colmore Row, this hotly anticipated restaurant fuses French recipe inspiration with British produce and has swiftly become the most sought-after fine dining location in the city centre. Offering unrivalled views of Birmingham, exquisite dishes designed by Chris Emery, and an impressive selection of cocktails, wines and spirits, Orelle is certainly worth a visit.
Although there are five Michelin Star restaurants in Birmingham, we must admit to having a soft spot for Opheem, which sits just a seven minute walk away from our offices. Opened by Birmingham native Aktar Islam and inspired by his mother’s cooking methods, Opheem is an ode to the city’s diverse cultural heritage and offers a range of simply exquisite Indian dishes. Each dish is an explosion of colour, creating some of the most aesthetically pleasing plates we’ve ever seen, and we can vouch that they taste as good as they look!
Digbeth is synonymous with creative, industrial culture that is best reflected in local food hotspot Baked In Brick. Set within the stylish Custard Factory in the heart of Digbeth, the restaurant’s offerings are all based on the concept of wood-fired cooking, which gives a rugged authenticity to each and every meal. Their hand-crafted oven sits at the heart of the restaurant and has become famous for producing some of the best pizza’s this side of Rome.
The Jewellery Quarter has always been associated with style, which is abundant at The Jam House! This local music venue looks out across the picturesque St. Paul’s Square and has become the epicentre of the local music scene thanks to the involvement of Jools Holland. However, this stunning Georgian building isn’t just about the music, but offers enviable fine dining from their balcony restaurant. It is truly the best of both worlds!
Birmingham City Centre is full of fantastic foodie destinations, but Tattu is certainly one of the most impressive establishments. If you’ve been searching for upmarket food destination in the UK’s second city, you’ve most likely stumbled across Tattu’s famous moody purple interior adorned with an abundance of glorious foliage. However, the venue’s aesthetics aren’t the only impressive thing about Tattu – with a menu comprising of wagyu steaks and black cod, Tattu’s range of Asian-inspired delicacies are the ultimate expedition into upscale dining in the heart of Birmingham.
Although Harborne and Edgbaston have a variety of exceptional eateries, The Physician is perhaps the best of them all: it’s no wonder it has won the ‘Best Pub in the County’ National Pub & Bar award. The Physician in Edgbaston is steeped in history – it used to be the Sampson Gangee Library for the History of Medicine, which inspired its name, and this grandeur is infused into the incredible dishes served at this award-winning establishment. With classics such as Sirloin Steak, Roast Turkey, and Venison Pie, The Physician has something for everyone, all set within the historic resplendence of one of Birmingham’s finest 19th Century buildings.
When in Birmingham, you can do no better than attending a classic British pub. But as much as we adore a classic Wetherspoons, Birmingham is full of fantastic pubs that are abundant with character, namely the Old Joint Stock. This grade II listed building on Temple Row – which is, once again, just a few steps away from our Birmingham office – is surely one of the most aesthetically pleasing pubs in the country. The venue was originally designed as a library, hence its grandiose feel, but it now offers traditional pub food under its magnificently high ceilings and classic 19th Century décor. Better yet, the establishment even has its own adjacent theatre – it doesn’t get more British than that!
Much of this list has comprised of high-end restaurants, but what about those moments that call for inexpensive food that doesn’t scrimp of taste, quality and experience? Enter: Tiger Bites Pig! Just a stone’s throw from Birmingham New Street, this restaurant offers dishes inspired by Asian street food that is fresh and fast. They are especially renowned for their delicious bao buns, and it seems like we aren’t the only ones with an affinity for Tiger Bites Pig – it recently won the Best Newcomer Award from Deliveroo and was voted One To Watch at the Independent Birmingham Awards.
If you are familiar with Indian cinema, or even the whereabouts of Tom Cruise, you’ve surely heard of the phenomenon that is Asha’s. Started by Indian film pioneer Asha Bhosle, Asha’s offers upscale Asian dining in the heart of Birmingham – in fact, the restaurant sits directly opposite our Colmore Row offices, and our staff members have been known to frequent Asha’s on special occasions. From sumptuous Sea Bass Tikka to classic Tandoori Lamb, and a range of exquisite colourful cocktails, Asha’s is the perfect destination for avid foodies visiting Brum. If it’s good enough for Mr Cruise, it’s good enough for us!
