Centrick providing shelter for earthquake survivors

Property specialist Centrick has pledged to support dozens of families who are struggling to survive in freezing conditions after losing their homes in the earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria.

The Birmingham-based company is backing Oxfam’s appeal following the disaster and is aiming to provide shelter for at least 40 families by donating a proportion of its income from property sales and lettings nationally.

Donations to the appeal are helping to get life-saving supplies to earthquake survivors in both Turkey and Syria in light of the events earlier this month and the news that another tremor struck in the early hours of February 21st. The most urgent needs include emergency shelter and winter kits as well as food, clean water, sanitation and hygiene.

Centrick founder James Ackrill said: “The earthquakes in Syria and Turkey have had far reaching impacts. As it stands, more than 44,000 people have lost their lives and tens of thousands more have lost their homes and face a heart-breaking future amid a freezing winter.

“At Centrick, we know the importance of a home and the security that it brings for families and individuals wherever they are in the world. We want to help wherever we can, which is why we’re pledging to support Oxfam in providing shelter for 40 families by donating a proportion of all of our lettings and property sales instructed, so that we can provide vital support for those in their time of need.”

Turkey has ended rescue efforts in all but two provinces two weeks after the massive earthquake. The epicentre of the 7.8-magnitude earthquake on 6 February was in Kahramanmaras. More than 44,000 people are confirmed to have lost their lives in south-eastern Turkey and northern Syria.

Searches are continuing in Kahramanmaras and Hatay but hopes of finding any more earthquake survivors are fading.  The death toll is expected to climb, with about 345,000 apartments in Turkey known to have been destroyed and many people still missing.
